As spring gets closer, I can’t help but get this feeling that I should be planning a wedding or something… Probably because this time last year, we were in the thick of it. We were down to the wire with our wedding only about 3 weeks away! Every waking minute was filled with doing something wedding prep oriented. Cleaning out our garage for our backyard reception, gathering goodies from the thrift stores to spray paint, making sure we had enough silverware, dishes, glasses, seating, food, etc., etc. etc…
…And then my friends Katie Myrick and Christina Forbes stole me away for an afternoon of bridal portraits that made every bit of wedding related stress at that time melt away. In that moment, all the elevated blood pressure I had been feeling from planning our wedding was so worth it. Don’t get me wrong, it was going to be worth it just by getting to marry my Jerry, no question there! But getting to step away from the stresses of those last few weeks and feel like a bride and not just a wedding coordinator, even if just for a few hours was so rewarding.
I looked beautiful, and more importantly, I felt beautiful.
I assure you I don’t feel that way often. And it’s even less often (pretty much non-existent) that I can admit out loud to myself that I look beautiful. But I can happily admit that I did this time last year! ..And I should – every bride should – be able to admit that about herself. She deserves it.
Even as a wedding photographer myself I never really knew the internal value of having bridal portraits taken. It’s more than just having some photos you can present at your reception. It’s more than just a trial run for hair/makeup. It’s a reward for yourself. It’s a chance for you to relax and simply relish in feeling beautiful without the wedding-day-of jitters snuffing out the focus you should have on yourself as a bride.
…And focusing on yourself and your beauty is SO allowed when you are a bride.
I’m forever grateful to my friends Katie Myrick who took the photos, and Christina Forbes assisting, for helping celebrate this special time in my life as a bride!
