A couple weeks ago I happened upon a post on Green Wedding Shoes of a Greenhouse Wedding that just sent me over the moon. In my excitement I posted on Facebook that surely there is a couple out there who wants to get married in a Greenhouse! ..and if so, I am your girl! I should have known before I even posted that the couple who would bite on the idea would be one of our May 2017 couples – Will + Caitlin.
Want to know why? They are both botanists.
While we knew their wedding won’t be held in a greenhouse, we had yet to plan their engagement session :-))) Lucky for me, Caitlin is just about to finish her Master’s at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA and has access to the campus. To further our luck – W&M has a research greenhouse that is chock full of the most gorgeous and interesting specimens you’ve ever seen! This lab was built in the 60’s and has so much retro character and many plant forms that have been surviving there for 40+ years! Some of these larger specimens have even broken out of their terracotta planters and grown into the architecture of the building, taking over the space and making you feel like you are walking into a tropical forest.
Sadly, that gorgeous building full of so much character and history, is slated to be torn down just weeks from now. A new lab has been built on campus and the plants will start to be moved any day now. Many of the large trees that have been there for 30 or 40 years and have planted their way into pieces of the building itself and stretched their roots 10, 15 feet down the lengths of the tables, likely won’t survive the move.
The new building, I’m sure will be grand and will be full of smaller, contained botanical beauties but it just won’t share the same tropical oasis feel as it will 50 years from now when these little plants will have taken over into their new environment :-) Perhaps in 50 years I can photograph Will + Caitlin’s Grandchildren’s engagement session there! Lol!
Timing is everything and I know in this case, God knew that this opportunity to celebrate Will + Caitlin’s engagement to one another would be the most meaningful in a place that celebrates their mutual passion for nature and where Caitlin has spent many hours working toward her career. I’m thankful that Green Wedding Shoes posted their Greenhouse feature when they did, to spark a fire under myself and Caitlin to utilize the gorgeous environment of the W&M greenhouse before it was too late!
I have been oogoogling (that is totally a word) over these colors and these smiles since last weekend and I am SO thrilled to share them!
(P.S. You may even recognize this couple from their modeling talents in our Winter Styled Shoot!)
How about that succulent hair clip made by Yeopim Flowers!?
